Has it ever happened to you that you set out on a new diet or exercise routine with a friend, and while the friend is seeing quick results, dropping the pounds seemingly effortlessly, nothing happens on your end?
You struggled to find the strength and motivation to get started, to drag yourself out of bed earlier in the morning or skip the chocolate chip cookie offered at the office, and now this!
What will you do? Will you throw in the towel and pout, or will you gather all your super powers – I know you have them – and keep on pushing through?
That’s the question I had to ask myself many years ago when I found myself in a fitness challenge with some colleagues and had to listen to them gloating about losing weight. Both of them, a guy and a girl, saw immediate results from our challenge, while I had not lost any weight after several weeks. Boy, was it hard to keep going, stay motivated, and not get discouraged.
But you know what? I kept going, and going, and going, and ended up in the best shape of my life the following year.
What I learned about my body that year was that it needed a while to gain momentum, but once that “little snowball” got big enough it just kept increasing in speed and size and eventually surpassed the other snowballs. Boom!
We are almost three weeks into the new year, and once again, I only have the tiniest snowball to show. While I have really picked up my cardio and weight training sessions, and eat an average of over 200 calories less per day, I have yet to lose a single ounce. So frustrating.
But, I will keep going, and I want you to keep going too. No two bodies are alike, and it is important to truly listen to what your body is telling you.
Listen! Don’t be discouraged, keep experimenting to see what works for you, and above all, keep pushing!
